Experience

I currently work as a full-time Child and Family Therapist for a non-profit organization in Kennett Square. Some of my responsibilities within this position include providing counseling and academic support for children and adolescents as well as psychoeducation for parents to help them learn how to best meet their children's individual psychological, developmental and educational needs. I enjoy tutoring and coaching students of all ages and abilities. I am passionate about helping students tear down any barriers that are preventing them from getting the most out of their learning because I believe that education is a crucial key to success. I believe in a collaborative tutoring and academic coaching approach, and in helping my students to help themselves. I equip my students with the tools necessary to excel beyond the time that I work with them. My approach is unique in that I work closely with students to discover their specific learning style and I tailor each session to fit their specific needs. I also enjoy "re-working" the material to make the learning process active and fun. For example, for math, I use manipulatives, pictures, metaphors, stories, as well as real life examples to help my students reach a higher level of understanding. I also use a range of creative techniques for test anxiety, study skills, memorization, reading comprehension, specific testing strategies, and writing strategies, as well as distraction reorientation and self-monitoring (for students with ADD or ADHD). My personal goal within each of my tutoring/academic coaching relationships is to help my students reach a high level of content comprehension and true understanding, rather than simply being able to produce the correct answers on an exam. I also strive to make the learning process as enjoyable as possible! I also enjoy providing assistance to high school students with completing college entrance applications and essays, as well as finding and applying for local and national college scholarships. I also provide customized standardized test preparation for the following exams: SAT, ACT, Praxis, GRE and LSW I am a graduate of West Chester University's Master's of Social Work Program. I also received a Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology from West Chester University. I have completed college level math courses through Calculus, and I have a background in the hard sciences, as I completed the first year of my undergraduate degree as a Chemistry-Biology (pre-med) major. I also graduated from West Chester University's writing-intensive Honors College, and having graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology, I have taken a number of child development, and psychology courses. I can offer help in the aforementioned subject areas, as well as a variety of others. During my graduate studies, I worked as a graduate assistant for West Chester University's Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (OSSD), where I worked with students with documented learning disabilities, physical limits, as well as mental and/or emotional difficulties. This position allowed me to help students address areas such as note taking skills, customized study skills based on learning style, self-advocacy through understanding of strengths and limits, time management, academic organization, grade tracking, GRE and Praxis prep, self care, as well as a range of subject-specific help based on the classes my students are enrolled in. This position provided me with one-on-one experience in working with students with a range of disabilities and learning differences, including reading and writing related disabilities, dyslexia, math related disabilities and anxiety, asperger's syndrome, autism, traumatic brain injury, hearing impaired, ADD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, epilepsy, sensory-processing disorder, and anxiety disorder. During the 10-11 academic year, I worked as a writing tutor for the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities and addressed areas such as reading comprehension, the creative writing process, formal research papers, as well as mechanics, structure, and depth of thought process in writing with undergraduate and graduate students that attend West Chester University. I charge $45 an hour. I am also willing to work with financially restricted students and families on a sliding fee scale, as I do not feel that finances should dictate who may and may not receive supplemental help.
